Multimedia is a medium of communication that provides information to users in a simple and powerful manner. We are all well familiar with smartphones, computers, and other digital devices. We use these devices for many tasks such as listening to music, watching videos or films, playing games, watching animations or reading books, booking tickets or shopping, etc.
When we use these devices — the images, sound, animation, and the resulting video formed by all of them working together — all of these are multimedia. In other words, the integration of Text, Graphics, Sound, Video, and Animation is called Multimedia.
At present, multimedia is being used extensively in the fields of education, entertainment, business, advertising, and all other sectors.
Multimedia is formed from two words: Multi (meaning many) and Media (meaning a medium of communication through which you can easily convey your message to others). Multimedia is also a part of media, in which several elements are used — such as Text, Image, Audio, Video, Animation, etc.
Multimedia provides information in a very easy and attractive manner. In simple words — multimedia combines text, data, images, graphics, audio, and video and presents them digitally so that information reaches the user in a better and more effective way.
Multimedia plays an extremely useful role in our daily lives. The various forms of multimedia are an integral part of our daily routine and are also very useful in other important tasks.
If you are listening to songs while travelling, playing mobile games, or watching a cartoon show — all of these are examples of multimedia. Music is a form of multimedia that is widely used everywhere and every minute of the day. Listening to music on the radio can also be seen as a form of multimedia.
The main purpose of using multimedia is to communicate easily with people. For example, a radio channel is able to share music with all the people of a state or country. Radio stations also need to play pleasant music that is popular among a large number of listeners, so that the number of advertisements can increase.
If you are a teacher, you can use various forms of multimedia to reach your students. Teachers use various types of multimedia tools to explain difficult subjects to students — through audio/video lectures and presentations. Students want variety in teaching methods; they get bored easily if the teacher always discusses a topic without any variety. So if you want to make the lesson easy and interesting for students, you should use multimedia.
If you are building a company website, it is very important that you keep the information simple, clear, and interesting. Websites are powerful tools for attracting customers to a specific product. If you use different forms of multimedia on your website, visitors will stay longer and browse your entire site. You can choose from good graphics, music files, video files, and even simple mini games to add to your website.
If communication is one of your work goals, you should definitely use some digital media to help you reach your target audience better. You need to understand that people don't like reading long articles and very detailed product information, so it is better to keep it in audio or video form to attract their attention.
In this modern age of communication, there is a great need to promote and spread information — whether it is news or any other information. With the increasing number of TV channels, the need for multimedia in advertising agencies, event management companies, and the media industry has truly grown. Multimedia is most widely used in entertainment and gaming, and besides these, it is also used in every industry such as Hospitality, Aviation, Banking, Insurance, Science & Technology, etc.
4.1 Education
Multimedia has great importance in the field of education. The use of multimedia is very important especially for children in schools. It is used extensively in the field of education and training, through which even the most difficult subject can be easily understood through pictures, presentations, and animations. Nowadays, the classroom is no longer limited to traditional methods; it now requires audio and visual media. Multimedia integrates all of these into one system.
The use of multimedia in education has promoted the development of computer-based training. Multimedia has also played an important role in developing students' practical abilities — especially in virtual environments in medicine — by gaining skills through practical activities. In mathematical and scientific research, multimedia is mainly used for modelling and simulation. Many e-learning companies and platforms work in this field.
4.2 Advertising
Multimedia plays an important role in the field of advertising. Whether print or electronic advertising, multimedia is used extensively in advertisements to persuade and influence customers. Through multimedia, it is easy to show products attractively and attract customers. First, an effective multimedia advertisement is designed on a computer using professional software, and then it is brought before the consumer — capable of luring people with detailed descriptions of all features of the product.
4.3 Communication Media
Instead of emphasising a single media format, today there are several communication platforms including printing, broadcasting, and online distribution. Information reaches people through more than one medium. All these mediums use multimedia. For example — various magazines and newspapers. Multimedia plays an important role in publishing houses — designing newspapers and other work is done through it. In newspapers today, not only text but also photographs can be seen. This not only makes the newspaper an ideal example but also proves the ability of multimedia. Through multimedia software, the format and design of e-magazines, e-newspapers, etc., on the internet is also an effective medium.
4.4 Entertainment & Gaming Industry
Multimedia is most used in the entertainment industry, especially for developing special effects in films and animation. Entertainment everywhere at all times — digital channels like Netflix or Amazon Prime are all possible through multimedia. In films, unrealistic scenes like cars flying or falling from great heights involve multimedia mainly in the post-production process. Talking books with entertaining stories and games too.
One of the most exciting applications of multimedia is games. Nowadays, live internet is used for gaming in which multiplayer games are popular. Integrated audio and video effects make various types of games more entertaining. 3D effects and virtual reality games are also quite popular.
4.5 Business
Nowadays, multimedia is being used extensively in commercial sectors. Business establishments are getting attractive flex boards made for advertising their products, which can be seen in every area of the city through hoardings. Attractive and effective advertisements designed through graphics are being published in newspapers and magazines to reach more and more customers. Using multimedia, business establishments are building attractive websites to reach more and more customers at limited cost. Amazon, Flipkart and many e-marketing companies have established themselves in the world and are earning huge profits. Through attractive websites and mobile apps, customers sitting at home are buying products — all made possible through multimedia.
4.6 Governance
Using multimedia, the government is able to easily reach the public with its schemes. Making all government schemes easily accessible to the general public through posters, mobile apps, and websites has been made possible through multimedia. The use of digital payment, etc., has also become convenient for everyone through multimedia.
4.7 Health & Medicine
Through various pictures, animations, and videos — from children to the elderly, and from cities to villages — it has become very easy to build understanding among all about cleanliness, symptoms and prevention of common diseases, nutrition, vaccination, etc.
4.8 Others (Science & Technology)
Multimedia has extensive applications in Science and Technology. It is capable of transferring audio, messages, and formatted multimedia documents. It also helps in live conversation through audio messages. In mathematical and scientific research, multimedia is mainly used for modelling and simulation. For example, a scientist can view the molecular model of a particular substance and make changes to arrive at a new substance. Viewing images of the inside of the body through examination equipment in hospitals on screen is also made possible through this. Doctors can be trained by watching virtual surgery, or they can simulate how the human body is affected by diseases spread by viruses and bacteria, and then develop techniques to prevent it.
Multimedia is a collection of many elements such as Text, Audio, Graphics, Video, and Animation. All elements of multimedia are delivered better and more effectively to users through computers. A detailed description of multimedia elements is as follows:
5.1 Text
Text is used in multimedia mostly for headings, headlines, menus, etc. Text presents information through letters, numbers, and special characters. The most commonly used software for viewing text files are Microsoft Word, Notepad, WordPad, etc. Most text files are used with extensions like .DOC, .TXT, etc.
5.2 Audio
Audio means sound waves that we can hear. Audio is an analogue signal, which is stored in a computer by converting it to a digital signal with the help of an ADC (Analog to Digital Converter). Digital Audio Data prepared by the computer can be heard via speakers or headphones. Audio includes speech, music, etc.
5.3 Graphics
Every multimedia presentation is based on graphics. The use of graphics in multimedia makes it possible to present any subject more effectively in visual form. Commonly used graphic viewing software includes Windows Picture Manager, Picasa Photo Viewer, Internet Explorer, etc. Commonly used graphics editing software includes Adobe Photoshop, CorelDRAW, InDesign and many others, through which graphics can be easily edited and made effective and attractive.
5.4 Video
Video means moving pictures with sound. It is the best way to communicate with each other. In multimedia, it is used to present information more effectively and saves a large amount of time. Commonly used video editing software includes Adobe Premiere, VideoPad and many others. Many mobile apps are also available for editing. Players: QuickTime, Real Player, Windows Media Player.
5.5 Animation
A collection of still graphic images displayed one after another in such a way as to give the impression of motion in the picture is called Animation. Animation has a series of pictures in which each picture is replaced by the next after a certain interval so that the picture appears to be moving.
An essential quality of a multimedia computer system is that it should be capable of capturing different types of media, editing them, using video/audio, storing all of them, and sending all types of data from one computer to another via modem or network.
Since many types of media are included together in multimedia, special hardware and software are required for using multimedia and making multimedia projects. Mobile devices, laptops, or desktop computers can all be used to consume multimedia, but for creating multimedia-related projects, designers generally use high-configuration desktop computers.
6.1 Multimedia Hardware
For multimedia applications, the computer needs more memory (storage capacity) and processing power than a normal computer that can only work on text. Based on functionality, a multimedia computer system can be divided into two categories:
6.2 Types of Multimedia Hardware Devices
- Analogue Input: Microphone, Video Camera, Photographic Camera
- Analogue Processing: Video Effect Device, Audio Effect Device, Audio Mixer
- Analogue Storage & Output: Speakers, Video Display, Video Tape Recorder, Audio Tape Recorder

6.2.1 CPU (Central Processing Unit)
The Central Processing Unit is the most important part of a computer — it is the part where all tasks are processed and synchronised. The computer's capacity is measured by the speed of data processing. For multimedia use, Pentium Processor IV or higher is preferred.
6.2.2 Graphics Card
A graphics card is connected to the computer's motherboard. When you view pictures or video on a computer, or play games, the graphics card works to display them better. A graphics card is the hardware component that displays all graphics on the monitor. It converts graphical data into signals so the monitor can understand it. It is also known as a Video Card, Graphic Adapter, or Display Adapter.
Most computers have integrated graphics processing in the CPU for normal use (watching pictures, videos). But for high-graphics software like gaming or video editing, an additional graphics card with its own RAM and processor — called a GPU (Graphical Processing Unit) — needs to be installed.
6.2.3 Memory & Storage Devices
You need memory to store production files, original audio and video clips, edited audio/video segments, and various files used during multimedia production, as well as backup of your project files.
| Type | Description |
|---|---|
| Primary Memory (RAM/ROM) | Contains only the data and instructions currently being processed. Limited and fast. Data is lost when computer is off. Sub-categories: RAM and ROM. |
| Cache Memory | Very high-speed semiconductor memory that helps the CPU process faster. Acts as a buffer between CPU and main memory. Stores the most frequently used data and programs. |
| Secondary Memory | Also known as external or non-volatile memory. Slower than main memory. Used for permanent storage. Examples: Disk, CD-ROM, DVD, etc. Multimedia files generally take more storage space. |
6.2.4 Input Devices
- Keyboard: The most common and popular input device. Layout is like a traditional typewriter with additional keys. Available in 84, 101/102, 104, or 108 key variants. Special multimedia keyboards are available for volume control and gaming.

When the light pen is placed on the screen, the photocell sensing element detects the screen location and sends the signal to CPU. Mainly used with design tablets for designing on a computer.
- Digitizer: A hardware device that receives analogue information (like sound or light) and records it digitally. The process is called digitisation. Example: A digital camera is a digitiser — light enters through the lens, hardware and software inside the camera converts it to binary data and stores it as an image file.
- Scanner: An input device that works like a photocopying machine. Used when information is available on paper and needs to be transferred to the computer's hard disk for modification. Captures images from the source, converts them to digital form that can be stored on disk, and can be edited before printing. Many mobile applications also offer scanning facilities.
- Microphone: An input device for inputting sound, stored digitally. Used alone or integrated with headphones. Applications include adding voice to multimedia presentations or mixing music.
- Speaker: An output device for producing sound stored digitally. Used for adding audio to multimedia presentations or for film screening. All modern computer monitors have integrated speakers; mobile devices also have built-in speakers.
- Digital Camera: An input device for inputting images, stored digitally. Used for adding images to multimedia presentations or personal purposes.

6.2.5 Output Devices
- Flat-Panel Display Monitor: Refers to a class of video devices with less volume, weight, and power requirement than CRTs. Can be hung on walls or worn on the wrist. Divided into: (i) Emissive Displays — convert electrical energy to light (e.g., Plasma Panels, LEDs); (ii) Non-Emissive Displays — use optical effects to convert sunlight/light from another source into graphics patterns (e.g., LCD).
- Printer: An electronic device for printing digital information on paper. (i) Dot Matrix Printer — prints characters by joining dots; has a pin matrix on the print head; (ii) Laser Printer — produces high-quality images for office/business purposes using a laser beam on a photo-sensitive drum.
- Image Projector: An output device used to project information from the computer onto a large screen so a group of people can see it simultaneously. A presenter first creates a presentation on the computer, then the projector is plugged into the system to present to a large audience.
- Speaker & Sound Card: A computer needs both a sound card and speakers to hear audio. Most motherboards provide an on-board sound card. The main function of the sound card is to convert the digital sound signal into analogue for speakers, which can be increased or decreased in volume. For gaming technology, Virtual Reality headsets are also included.
6.3 Multimedia Software
Software is a set of instructions or programs that directs a computer to perform a specific task. Multimedia software directs hardware to use and produce media elements. Various software are available for using and producing these media elements (films, sound, text, animation, graphics, etc.) such as Paint Brush, Photo Finish, Animator, Photoshop, 3D Studio, Corel Draw, Sound Forge, Adobe Premiere, Apple HyperCard, Photo Magic, Picture Publisher, etc.
